About Us
Mountain Gymnastics Center
|
Mountain Gymnastics Center opened in March of 1986, after much planning,
work, and prayers. Shelley Thomas was and still is the owner and head
coach.
The first gymnastics facility was in an upstairs room above the earlier location
of Rogers Grocery store on the town square. This was the only location we
could find in town that had enough floor space (for the basics) and enough
ceiling height (12 ft). It was formerly the Masonic Lodge, so we had to redo
the floors and remove risers along the side to have a level floor.
The main gym was 30 x 50 ft. and the very first classes were held without any
equipment, as it had not arrived for that first week. So, the classes were held
on the carpet.
By the next week the uneven bars, the beam, a homemade vaulting horse, a
spring board for vault, and several mats had been added. This was the first
gymnastics facility in the area, the closest other gym was just about 55 miles
away.
The gym stayed in that same facility until January of 2005. Over the years the
equipment was updated and added to as we got ready for moving into a new
and bigger gym.
Our philosophy has always been to emphasize safety and fun, while
encouraging the students to be the best they can be. We concentrate on the
individual gymnast and emphasize their accomplishments and goals.
